What’s wrong with the CELTA?
The CELTA is a great course, one that I would recommend to anyone. However, the fact is that, for a number of reasons, it isn’t for everybody.
Due to a variety of factors, the CELTA is very expensive—too expensive for most prospective English teachers in most parts of the world to afford.
It’s too intense. Being under a huge amount of pressure to learn so many things so quickly doesn’t always produce the best results.
It is overkill. Many believe that too much is crammed into a single 120-hour course; most of what CELTA candidates learn from the course is learnt after the course is over, when candidates transpose their lessons to their teaching contexts. In other words, it takes more than 120 hours to learn what is taught you on the CELTA.
This is why we have created our own TEFL course.
EfA’s Communicative Language Teaching TEFL Course
Our TEFL course has the following features:
· 120-hours (the minimum to be able to teach in China and other Asian countries)
· Teaching practice (with real students) as well as micro-teaching (teaching your fellow candidates)
· Input modeled on what candidates receive on a CELTA course
· Based on the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT)
Accreditation (or How do I know this course is any good?)
The quality of our course is guaranteed by… me, basically. I designed the course, and I will either train on it, or train the trainers on the course. I will also observe and assess any and all of the trainers working on the course, to ensure that the courses they are running meet my personal standard.
Those of you who already know me will know that I have very high standards, but I am well aware that not everyone knows me. Therefore, I am also acquiring CPD UK certification for our TEFL certificate.
Of all the TEFL certifying bodies, I chose this one because they actually take a very close and critical look at courses they certify, and make sure they meet the highest standards--or else they don't put their stamp on them.
The course will run starting in January 2025 in two locations in Morocco: Fes and Casablanca.
It will run part-time, so practicing teachers and busy students alike will be able to take it.
